JUNGE SZENE: MEET ME HALFWAY - OPENING

In the organizer's words:

Opening
Meet Me Halfway
A joint exhibition with photographers in training and graduates

For the second time, the festival is launching the EMOP Special Young Scene, a format that gives younger photographers a voice and a place. Following the success of the joint exhibition for EMOP Berlin 2023, Drängende Gegenwart. Der Blick der jungen Generation, six Berlin and Potsdam institutions in the field of photography education are once again showing photographic works that have emerged from their respective institutions in a joint exhibition.

The Lette Verein Berlin, the Ostkreuzschule für Fotografie, the University of Europe for Applied Sciences, the HTW Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin, the International Photography School and the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences are all taking part.

Following on from the EMOP Berlin 2025 leitmotif, what stands between us, the young scene was invited to develop and submit works that deal with topics of social and socio-political relevance in the face of a present permeated by diverse conflicts. This generation of young artists is particularly affected by the upheavals and existential crises of our time. As curator, Marie-Luise Mayer was invited to design an exhibition with her own focus from the total of 36 submissions. The result is the project Meet Me Halfway:

"if everyone only looks inside, does the outside get bigger and bigger?

The gray, that which stands between us, that which separates us - it should not be understood as a separation, but as a connection. This gray is mobile, it is malleable, it speaks many languages, and it is active. In the student works selected for this year's EMOP Special, there is a desire for understanding. Trends towards alienation are countered with empathy, voids are highlighted and filled with ideas, images are created that evoke understanding. They also include moments of farewell and searching. The group show demonstrates that our togetherness can be understood as a practice of understanding, that social fragmentation and passivity are indeed phenomena of our present, but that they also offer opportunities if individual freedom is not practiced as hyper-individualism, but as a universal condition and language. The very different photographic positions assembled here raise many questions - about identity, relationships, power relations, social participation, mechanisms of perception - and translate them into images."
