German Canadian Garage Raw'n'Roll Duo
If you dig the sound of R.L. Burnside, Andrew Williams, The Cramps, we fit in well …

Michael Madsen – Wien Delta Punks
Certainly Mister Zappa was right – writing about music is like dancing about architecture. This comes to mind even more so when trying to find words for the madness the NEW YORK WANNABES unleash in their songs with minimal instrumentation – just drums, guitar and voice. Inevitably the Blues come to mind, but we’re not talking about the aberrations your garden variety Clapton fan listens to in his family car on his weekend off.
We’re talking steamy juke joints in the Mississippi delta, the cradle of rock music, soaked in alcohol and excess. We’re talking about the same stuff world class dilettante rockers like THE STOOGES or THE CRAMPS, OBLIVIANS and GORIES carved their truly adventurous and unique musical miniatures from. If you were to draw a line in music history linking all those points, somewhere along that line you would come acoss THE NEW YORK WANNABES. Theirs is an uncompromisingly energetic Blues-drenched noisy rock you can’t learn in music school. The kind of music you get to play only when you hand over your soul to the devil – preferably at a desolate crossroads in the middle of nowhere. Heavily recommended!
Dead Beat Label and Mailorder from Ohio wrote: NEW YORK WANNABES- Loud And Proud LP. 2 piece Garage band from Germany that brings to mind THE CRAMPS, 68 COMEBACK, OBLIVIANS and THE GORIES. This is just good old 60’s blues Garage Punk trash with songs about good and evil and played with blood, sweat and tears! There’s a very genuiness to their song writing and it comes off very natural and pure. RECCOMENEDED!

The New York Wannabes are a German blues punk trash band, half male & half female, so when the topic of this duo comes up, the Cramps are a frequent point of reference. And it’s true that in songs such as “Jazz” or “Soul Brother”, Lux and Ivy seem to be lurking in the shadows and smiling in approval, while Iggy sneers along to tortured riffs reminiscent of ‘68 Comeback (“Headin’ South”) or the Gories. With Sue on drums, Lucky the Beast (!) sings, preaches and abuses his strings in true swamp rock style, with a healthy dose of hallucination and menace. I’m signing up their fan club straight away. This 33-rpm (have you noticed how this format has had a proper comeback recently?) is called Loud And Proud… Suits them rather well.

With this band name and the record titled Loud and Proud, I thought for sure this was going to be bad NYHC. I’m glad to say that I was very wrong! While this formula has been done before, not often does a band get it right like New York Wannabes have here. The band is a two-piece, male and female garage rock band from Germany that worship at the altar of Lux and Ivy. Musically, they play fucked up blues rock’n’roll, from the heart, without an ounce of pretentiousness. Anyone who is into primitive garage rock like Oblivians or the Gories should seek this out! –Mark Twistworthy (P.Trash, ptrashrecords.com)
