You’ve probably heard of Jasmine Thompson. Maybe you watched her, barely a teen, rack up millions of views covering songs by Death Cab for Cutie, Bon Iver and Rihanna on YouTube. Perhaps you saw her rocket to fame, perform on The Today Show and embark on epic tours when she was only 13. But there was never any grand plan for teen pop stardom on Jasmine or her family’s part. Discovered by a major US label at 12, ideas of what a young female artist should look and sound like were projected upon the London talent, resulting in huge success but leaving little room for self-discovery or expression. “I think everyone eventually has that moment of questioning, is what I’m doing fulfilling?” she says. “I just happened to hit that point really young.” With a producer she trusted – legendary Eg White, who has worked with Adele and Dua Lipa – Jasmine eventually began developing her own sound at 15, resulting in 2019’s COLOUR EP. “I was so proud of what we made but it felt like my label just wanted a different artist; someone that wasn't me,” she says. Told bluntly that the release wouldn’t be a focus for them, she was encouraged to also make something in line with their vision. “It was all becoming very bubblegum pop, vanity-based and over-exposing,” she adds. By 18, Jasmine was burnt out. “I remember so many people telling me, this is exactly when you shouldn't be walking away.” To the world, she was living the dream but in reality she was not in a good place. Following her gut, she decided to take a break. Now 23 and out of her major label deal, Jasmine is gearing up to share the brilliant, deeply personal and emotionally vulnerable music she’s always wanted to make. “It’s really nice to finally be in that position,” she says. “It’s made me feel passionate about things again.” At the start of this year she dropped “No Poetry”, a beautiful folk song written just three days after her father’s funeral. “I was in a really weird place, obviously,” she says. “It felt therapeutic but it was also pretty savage.” Anyone who has experienced grief will feel seen on listening, as well as comforted by the delicate but emotionally raw, early Laura Marling-esque track. In October 2024, Jasmine will follow this up with the first in a string of singles from her new project, made up of five reflective alt-pop songs – all connected and completely autobiographical. No longer restricted or pigeon-holed, the record is free and expressive. While still pop at its core, things are moving in a folkier direction, with this and future releases destined to be performed in intimate concert halls, packed with hushed fans hanging on every thoughtfully-selected word. “For the first time in a long time,” Jasmine says, “I feel proud and excited. I can’t wait to share this.” -
