3 Years in Exile: A Live Stream About Theater, War, Love, and the Search for Meaning
On March 2 at 19:00 CET, the independent theater "Temporary Association Chronotope" (Armenia), in collaboration with Dialogbüro Vienna (Austria), will host the stream "Chronotope On Air." Theater critic Alexey Kiselev and director Ilya Moshchitsky will go live from Yerevan to showcase Chronotope's performances and discuss theater, war, love, and the search for meaning.
Ilya Moshchitsky: «I see a key aspect that unites both those who left Russia because of the war and those who stayed with an anti-war stance. This aspect, or rather this challenge, is simple: “To preserve oneself.” Achieving this is extremely difficult both “inside” and “outside.” How do you integrate into a foreign society without losing what essentially defines you? And how do you survive “inside” under conditions of censorship, self-censorship, and repressive pressure from all sides? We are ready to talk and listen, to show what we have managed to accomplish over the past three years, and to share our failures. I am sure this will be interesting and valuable both for those in a similar situation and for those in a radically different one who are willing to share their experiences. We know that good theater is essential for providing a person with the experience of transgression. The same applies to a meaningful dialogue – one that carries within it the experience of the Other. In short, we are about to transgress – and we invite you to join us».
The independent theater "Chronotope" was founded exactly three years ago in Yerevan. Its story may sound familiar to many cultural emigrants: a successful theater director moves to another country and starts "from scratch." Over three years, "Chronotope" has formed an independent troupe, staged four productions in Armenian, been nominated for the Armenian National Theater Award "Artavazd," and participated in the Voices Festival in Berlin. However, the Armenian chapter of "Chronotope" is not a story of unclouded success but rather one of a journey, integration, and the search for identity.
Theater critic Alexey Kiselev and "Chronotope" founder and director Ilya Moshchitsky invite viewers to discuss these topics live on YouTube. During the stream, audiences will see fragments from video recordings of performances created by "Chronotope" in Yerevan over the past three years, ask questions, and share their own experiences in the live chat.
Performances:
Երեք գույն ծիրանագույն / Three Colors: Apricot
Actors of the Yerevan National Theater came together to watch Krzysztof Kieślowski’s trilogy "Three Colors": "Blue," "White," "Red." This led them to their own reflections on war, love, and freedom. Trailer
Մոռանալ / To Forget
A poetic performance about the life and death of Sergei Parajanov. In times of ethical collapse, the creators seek truth, peace, and meaning in beauty. The action and aesthetics of the production intertwine with images from Parajanov’s films, collages, and biography in a unique existential rhyme. Trailer
Ես դեռ այստեղ եմ / I Am Still Here
A performance viewed by the audience through the storefront window of a gallery on Yerevan’s main street, while standing inside the building. Passersby become actors, and actors become passersby. The performance primarily addresses the theme of "The Other," placed in a foreign social environment. This is "Chronotope’s" latest premiere. Trailer
