12 social justice warriors sentenced to a low security prison, cut off from the outside world, waiting for release; waiting in close quarters, working their prison jobs and sitting on top of each other. Boredom and tedium prevail for those who ordinarily spend much of their time fighting for justice for all.
When a nationwide prison competition is announced the 12 are tasked with staging Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. The winners receive a reduction of their sentence.
How does one play Shakespeare, though, and can they work this out together? What are the characters actually saying, how could any of this be funny or relevant in the 21st century – or is this all a silly exercise to keep the 12 occupied, distracted from what is actually going on in the prison behind the scenes? Could it be that these 12 find themselves in a situationwith the potential to re-imagine society?
A Shrewd Awakening is an ensemble play partly devised by the 5th Semester […], heavily borrowing from Shakespeare’scomedy The Taming of the Shrew.
Performed in English for approx. 80 mins, the play contains adult language and a decent amount of rambunctious humour attempting to answer the question: How can we create a theatre fit for the multiple purposes and issues of our time?
