The castle brewery was converted into a cultural center in the 1980s. The building was listed as a historical monument, but had fallen into disrepair.

As a result, apprenticeships were created in the building trade and in the commercial sector. At its peak, "Werkhof gem. GmbH" employed 500 people in the following areas: construction, administration, sound, lighting, image and video technology, recycling, social services, furniture and housing services as well as renaturation, landscape protection and land reactivation.

The cultural work remained at Werkhof e. V. and developed just as well.

Soon there were professional theater groups in addition to the studios for educational purposes. Music events were offered on two stages. The event rooms - hall, catacomb and light studio - were visited by over 30,000 guests annually for concerts, cabaret and theater events. The Werkhof was the meeting place in the region for artists, theater and dance groups, clubs and people with ambitions in many areas.

Today, as with the other cultural centers in Hagen, the cultural work has been considerably reduced under the strong pressure to make savings. The focus of cultural work continues to be on promoting and collaborating with local music and theater groups.
