Since its opening in 1950, the THEATER AN DER PARKAUE - Junges Staatstheater Berlin has offered children and young people, schools, families and visitors of all ages space on three stages as well as in its art mediation work for initial encounters as well as ever new points of contact with theater in its many forms. From associative performances to detailed stagings, from classics to contemporary drama, from laboratories to parlor games - the Parkaue, as a place of joint exploration and experimentation, enables different perspectives and invites people to discover the diversity of aesthetics and mediation as well as art as a world of experience. With its productions, art education projects and festivals, it is considered a constant in the national and international children's and youth theater scene. THEATER AN DER PARKAUE reflects Germany's political history in an exemplary manner. The building was constructed in 1911 as a secondary school for boys according to the designs of the city architect Johannes Uhlig and the architect Wilhelm Grieme. In the course of the National Socialist instrumentalization of education, the school is renamed 'Joseph Goebbels School' in 1934. In 1948, the school building is rededicated for cultural purposes by order of the Soviet Military Administration in Germany (SMAD). In addition to classes in performing arts, music, art and natural history, the building also houses a miniature observatory, workshops, studios, a library, a cinema and the 'Theater der Freundschaft'. In 1959, Ilse Weintraut-Rodenberg took over the directorship of the first purely children's and youth theater of the Berlin Bühnen for almost 15 years. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the Berlin Senate appointed Manuel Schöbel to the house in 1991. From 2005 to 2019, Kay Wuschek was the theater's artistic director. In 2019, Florian Stiehler became acting artistic director, and since 2021 the artistic directorate has consisted of the duo Christina Schulz and Alexander Riemenschneider.
