The Sprengel Museum Hannover is a house for international art of the 20th and 21st centuries. The museum began with a generous donation from Margrit and Bernhard Sprengel, which still forms its core collection today: in 1969, the couple donated their collection of modern art to the state capital of Hanover. The donation was the initial spark for the construction of the museum, the first phase of which was opened in June 1979. The couple generously supported the construction of the museum. The state capital of Hanover and the state of Lower Saxony agreed to jointly fund the construction and ongoing operation of the museum, which opened in 1979.

In addition to the Sprengel Collection, the holdings of 20th century art from the city and state of Lower Saxony from the Lower Saxony State Museum Hanover and the Kestner Museum (now the Museum August Kestner) were brought together in the Sprengel Museum Hanover. The consolidation of these important collections makes the Sprengel Museum Hannover one of the most important centers of modern art. The museum's art collection has grown continuously through acquisitions, especially through donations and permanent loans.

In addition to the presentation of the collection, the Sprengel Museum Hanover shows numerous special exhibitions and thus provides a wide-ranging overview of artistic developments from modernism to the present day.
