MKM Museum Küppersmühle für Moderne Kunst

The MKM is a striking industrial monument from the 19th century, which was built as a mill at the time and operated as such for over 100 years (until its closure in 1972). Based on the master plan developed by British architect Sir Norman Foster, the former industrial wasteland of Duisburg's inner harbor was transformed into a multifunctional service area on the waterfront - with office and residential space, catering, cultural and leisure facilities - as part of the Emscher Park International Building Exhibition (1989-1999). The "old Küppersmühle" became the MKM Museum Küppersmühle for Modern Art.

New landmark in the Ruhr region: Since the laying of the foundation stone and around four years of construction, the extension to the Küppersmühle Museum by Herzog & de Meuron has been completed.

With the presentation of works from the Ströher Collection on a total of 5,000 square meters, the MKm will become a central location for German and European post-war art. On display are over 300 works dating back to the 1950s. In the new building, the focus is on Art Informel and abstraction by German artists, supplemented by a few positions of European post-war art. The rooms in the existing building are also mostly newly furnished. The focus here is on works of German post-war art.
