The Maxim Gorki Theater, located in the Singakademie on the boulevard Unter den Linden, is the smallest and most beautiful of Berlin's ensemble theaters; it is also a historically significant location. Founded in 1952 as a theater for the present, it became a municipal theater in the best sense for the citizens of East Berlin, critical and also dissident. In 1988, the theater prophetically anticipated the peaceful revolution of November 9, 1989, with Thomas Langhoff's production of Volker Braun's Transitional Society. It was also on a November 9, in 1848, that the first freely elected Prussian National Assembly was expelled from the city, having worked on a democratic constitution for Prussia at the Singakademie. Between these two events, the struggle for a democratically constituted, just and open society spanned from the proclamation of the German Republic in 1918, through the November pogroms of 1938 and the persecution and murder of the Jews, to the reunification of the city and the country, and culminates today in the current debates about the future of Berlin as a diverse European metropolis. Are we again living in a society in transition? This question arises in the ongoing crisis of economy and politics, which results in intensified social and cultural conflicts in our societies. The Gorky opens up to the city: with its wonderful ensemble, with Studio Я directed by Marianna Salzmann, with Gorky columnist Mely Kıyak and the colleagues of Gorky X, who invite you all to join in. The Gorki means the whole city, with everyone who has joined it in recent decades, whether through flight, exile, immigration, or simply growing up in Berlin. We invite into a public space, through the art of making and watching theater, to reflect on the condition humaine of contemporary man and his identity conflicts, to contribute to a careful and patient debate about our living together in today's diversity. How did we become what we are? And who do we want to be in the future? In short: who is we? We look forward to seeing you!
