The historic main building has shaped the cityscape since 1840 and today mainly houses humanities, economics and social sciences subjects such as law, economics and business administration or theology. In addition to the Audimax with its 800 seats, the Great Hall, where the first freely elected Bavarian post-war parliament convened in 1946, is one of the most famous lecture halls in the main building.

Other university buildings in Schwabing and Maxvorstadt are home to several faculties, from history, cultural studies, linguistics and literature to psychology, social sciences, education, politics and communication sciences.

Libraries, museums and archives: infrastructure for cutting-edge research

The university library is directly adjacent to the main building. It has a total of 5 million items in the Central Library and at 15 other locations. This includes the ultra-modern Philologicum, which opened in 2019: as LMU's largest specialist library, it houses the holdings of the Classics, German, Romance and Slavic Studies departments as well as the philology-related holdings of the Central Textbook Collection.

With 10.5 million titles, the Bavarian State Library houses an outstanding collection of special objects (such as maps, picture archives and sketchbooks) and one of the largest manuscript collections in the world. Many important museums - such as the Munich Pinakotheken, the Brandhorst Museum, the Glyptothek or the Museum of Egyptian Art - and archives such as the Bavarian State Archives are also located in the immediate vicinity of the main building and facilitate a wide range of collaborations.
