History of the Kunstverein

The Kunstverein Schwerin was founded in 2002 to establish a forum for contemporary visual art. Since then, various exhibitions and projects have been realized that have caused a sensation and enriched the art and cultural scene.

Initially, the exhibitions took place in various locations, e.g. in empty stores or in the cathedral. The former industrial halls of the E-Werk am Pfaffenteich were converted in order to stabilize the association's work. After careful restoration, 250 square meters of workshop space were transformed into exhibition areas, offices and storage rooms, which form an ideal basis for the Kunstverein's current work.
Andreas Wegner has been the artistic director and managing director since October 2015.

Thanks to the support of our members, Stadtwerke Schwerin and many sponsors, the association is able to offer a program that presents interesting positions of contemporary art to the people of Schwerin and their guests.

History of the building

In 1903, the city decided to build a new municipal power station. The generator hall, administrative wing and ancillary premises were then used by the Mecklenburg State Theatre and Schwerin Puppet Theatre. By using the north-west wing as a repair workshop for transformers, the history of the electricity supply led to a new type of supply in October 2007: The Kunstverein Schwerin offers the public a space for contemporary art.
