Art on five floors

Located in the heart of the state capital of Magdeburg, the museum derives its unique character from the combination of contemporary art and medieval architecture. The rooms of the museum are located in a Romanesque monastery complex, which was built at the beginning of the 11th century and is part of the "Romanesque Road".

Opened in 1975, the art museum can now look back on over forty years of collecting and exhibiting art. On a total of five floors, important positions of international art after 1960, historical sculpture from antiquity, the Middle Ages, modernism and especially the 20th century as well as contemporary art are on display. The exhibition program is supplemented by changing special exhibitions presenting international contemporary art. The latter are dedicated to selected themes or provide an insight into the work of pioneering contemporary artists.

Works from the collection are shown in the three vaults and the attic of the north wing. Other works have found their place in the extensive sculpture park that surrounds the building and invites visitors to linger.

In spring 2012, a very special project was created on the west and north wings with TransReflex: 17 large-format mirror panels that fold out from the plane of the façade at different angles or close the façade when closed. The panels integrate and multiply the surroundings, creating visual activity and vibrancy.
After extensive refurbishment until September 2022, the art museum has one more exhibition floor. The top floor in the north wing has been converted for art - especially painting and photography.
