The church on Hohenzollernplatz is a Protestant church in the Berlin district of Wilmersdorf. It was built from 1930 to 1934 according to Ossip Klarwein's designs from Fritz Höger's architectural office and is considered a major work of German expressionist architecture. The church was destroyed by fire in 1943. Essential elements of the interior were lost. Until 1961, the church was largely repaired. But it was not until the extensive renovation from 1990 to 1991 that the last war damage could be removed. The church is a listed building.HistoryPlanning for a church buildingIn the parish of Berlin-Wilmersdorf, there were only two churches until 1933: the church on the Wilhelmsaue and the church on Hochmeisterplatz. When the Auenkirche was consecrated in 1897, the then Deutsch-Wilmersdorf, which did not receive city rights until 1906, already had over 10,000 inhabitants. In 1904 the Grunewaldkirche was inaugurated, in 1910 the Hochmeisterkirche.In 1920 Wilmersdorf was incorporated into Greater Berlin, Schmargendorf, Grunewald and Halensee were now districts of Wilmersdorf. Due to the strong population growth in the extensive northern part of Wilmersdorf, where about 50,000 parishioners lived, the parish authorities of the then still undivided parish of Berlin-Wilmersdorf decided to build a church as well as a parish hall and rectory for the northern district of the parish on the property purchased in 1927 at Hohenzollernplatz. The architect and church builder Otto Bartning initially prepared two preliminary designs. After the subsequent architectural competition, the jury could not recommend any of the submitted designs.
