Kampnagel is Germany's largest independent performance and production venue and is one of the most important international stages for the performing arts. The former crane factory was converted into a multifunctional stage complex in 1984, following the interim use of the Deutsches Schauspielhaus and the cast rehearsal festivals of independent theater groups. Today, this comprises six stages, a cinema, nine rehearsal rooms and a restaurant. We offer our audience a wide range of different programs from international guest performances, the summer festival and theme series to productions of the independent Hamburg scene, youth theater and the promotion of young talent. Our programming shows a broad spectrum of aesthetic positions and groundbreaking tendencies not only in theater, dance and performance, but also music, visual arts or architecture. Kampnagel is a productive laboratory for the development of ideas, a think tank, a place for controversies, conferences, but also a lively concert hall, music lounge, club. Here we work on new formats that seek contemporary forms of publicity, communication, interaction, participation and knowledge transfer. Kampnagel is not only a temple of art. It opens up to society and the surrounding reality. We understand Hamburg not only as the city for whose inhabitants we invite and produce plays, but also as a space for investigation, a storehouse of materials, a setting, and of course as a stage that we occupy with mobile formats. In total, we present around a hundred premieres, world premieres and one-off events per season, which attracted a record 180,000 visitors to the Kampnagel site in the 2014/15 season.
