The Hessian State Archive Darmstadt is responsible for the records of the Darmstadt Regional Council, the subordinate state offices in the independent cities of Darmstadt and Offenbach as well as in the districts of Bergstraße, Darmstadt-Dieburg, Giessen (except for the Giessen Regional Council, which was established in 1981), Groß-Gerau and Offenbach, in the Odenwaldkreis, the Vogelsbergkreis and the Wetteraukreis.

As a historical archive, the Hessian State Archive Darmstadt preserves the records of the former Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt and the territories incorporated over the centuries (noble and ecclesiastical dominions, imperial cities) as well as the Grand Duchy of Hesse (until 1918) and the People's State of Hesse (until 1945) with the three provinces of Upper Hesse, Starkenburg (South Hesse) and Rhine Hesse.
