The Hessian Main State Archive in Wiesbaden is the central point of contact for all questions relating to Hessian history since 1945 and the Nazi era in the federal state. In addition to documents on denazification proceedings and compensation, the archives of the Hessian ministries as well as all authorities, courts and state institutions with jurisdiction over the whole of Hesse can be viewed here. As a historical archive, the records from the territory of the Duchy of Nassau, the Landgraviate of Hesse-Homburg, the Imperial City of Wetzlar and the administrative district of Wiesbaden are open to all interested parties.

In terms of subordinate state departments, the Main State Archive is responsible for the independent cities of Frankfurt am Main and Wiesbaden as well as the Hochtaunuskreis, the Lahn-Dill-Kreis, the district of Limburg-Weilburg, the Main-Kinzig-Kreis, the Main-Taunus-Kreis and the Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis.
