THOMAS BAUMGÄRTEL, THE BANANA STENCILER

Thomas Baumgärtel is not only well-known in the city, his famous banana stencil is also legendary beyond national borders and ennobles art locations worldwide. But the Cologne artist can do much more, as his exhibition "German Urban Pop Art" on 2,500 m2 in Hall 64 of Leskan Park shows. Baumgärtel has been active with the spray can since the 1980s - in addition, he repeatedly integrates acrylic painting and decollage techniques as well as performances into his work. He also lets his socially critical and political consciousness flow into his work. He deals with dictatorships and autocracies and takes a clear position on the climate catastrophe and the so-called refugee crisis. In addition to new works made especially for the show, key works of his oeuvre are also on view. Baumgärtel purposefully incorporates companies located in LeskanPark. "German Urban Pop Art" marks the highlight in the current exhibition cycle of the banana sprayer.
