With an area of 384 hectares or 427 hectares (including Maximilian Gardens, Court Garden and Finance Garden), the English Garden is one of the largest inner-city parks in the world (larger than Central Park in New York or Hyde Park in London). Today it stretches across the Hofgarten and Finanzgarten from Odeonsplatz to the far north of the city.

From 1789, Elector Karl Theodor had a public garden laid out in the style of a classical landscape garden in the former hunting grounds on the Isar. Sir Benjamin Thompson was commissioned with the planning. In addition to the first plantings, the Chinese Tower and the Kleinhesseloher See were created. From 1804, Friedrich Ludwig Sckell took over the design as court garden director. He created a varied park landscape with natural-looking wooded edges and wide meadow valleys. Today, the park functions as an important social meeting place and provides a valuable habitat for many endangered animal and plant species.
