Christuskirche Bremerhaven

The port and the city of Bremerhaven were founded in 1827. Just under two decades later, around 3,000 new settlers settled south of the Geeste in the middle of the small farming settlement of Geestendorf and established the port of Geestemünde. The resulting dual community of Geestendorf-Geestemünde used St. Mary's Church, built in the Middle Ages, as its place of worship. However, it soon became apparent that this was far too small for the growing number of parishioners, and so in 1863 it was decided to build a new church. In 1868, Baurat Hase was entrusted with the planning; it took until July 19, 1872 for the foundation stone to be laid.

The church council of the then parish of Geestendorf-Geestemünde decided to commission the architect and Royal Building Councillor Prof. Conrad Wilhelm Hase from Hanover to plan and build the church. Hase already had an important reputation as a master builder of new places of worship. The construction work took a good three years, so that the consecration could be celebrated on November 14, 1875. Two years later, however, it turned out that inferior mortar had been used in the construction of the tower's spire masonry, leading to fears of collapse. After demolition and reconstruction of the spire, the building was finally completed in 1880.
