Bremer Shakespeare Company

In over 35 years, the company has staged 66 Shakespeare productions and 15 productions from the playwrights' workshop, which were the result of collaborations between directors, actors and authors. In addition, there are numerous plays by classical and contemporary authors, many of them German premieres. The program is also enriched by inventions of new and unusual performance formats, such as Circus Quantenschaum, which combines scientific topics with artistry, and the multi-award-winning cooperation project with the University of Bremen, Aus den Akten auf die Bühne, which creates scenic readings from original historical documents. With the annual open-air theater Shakespeare im Park, the company has firmly established itself in the event calendars and in the hearts of the people of Bremen and the surrounding area. In 1989, the company moved into its own theater building in the Oberschule am Leibnizplatz complex in Bremen's Neustadt district, the Theater am Leibnizplatz, after which the corresponding streetcar stop is named. The cooperation with the Oberschule am Leibnizplatz is not the only aspect of the work with and for pupils. Thematically diverse workshops attract school classes from Bremen and other federal states.
The bremer shakespeare company has been supported with funds from the Bremen Senator for Culture since 1991. In addition to ticket sales in Bremen, the more than 40 guest performance tours throughout the German-speaking world each season are another important source of income. Invitations to national and international festivals contribute to our reputation; for example, we have been guests at the annual international Shakespeare Festival in Neuss since the first season in 1990. Our own festivals with international guests and co-productions, local and global collaborations make the company one of the most consistent and productive players in Bremen's cultural scene. Numerous awards confirm the artistic quality of the bremer shakespeare company. The founding and participation of numerous cultural networks in Bremen, such as the founding of the Theater-Schule-Campus and the Neustadt cultural network Vis-à-vis, anchor the company's theater work with the city, the district, the school, the university and many other cultural actors and cultural and educational institutions.
