The history of German emigration to Brazil will be 200 years old in 2024. In this documentary, Deutsche Welle Brasil examines the causes and consequences of German immigration in Brazil. It is a story that also contains a number of dark episodes, including on different sides.

They sought a better life and left everything behind: 200 years ago, the first German settlement was founded in São Leopoldo. 100 years later - in 1925 - four-year-old Ida Tepe from Lower Saxony sets off with her foster parents to build a new life for herself in Brazil. In 2024, her grandson Guilherme goes in search of clues. What drove German emigrants to leave their homeland in the 19th and 20th centuries? How did they shape Brazil?

Kultur Intensiv/Arts Unveiled accompanies Guilherme Becker on his journey and tells of the success stories and traumas - also for the indigenous and Afro-Brazilian population - associated with this migration movement. And how are relations between Brazil and Germany today, 200 years after the first emigrants set off on their journey into an uncertain future?

About the director Guilherme Becker:

Journalist Guilherme Becker was born in Novo Hamburgo, in southern Brazil, and studied journalism at Feevale University, as well as a Master's degree in European Studies, specializing in Society, Politics and Culture, at the Universities of Göttingen, in Germany, and Groningen, in the Netherlands. He has worked as a reporter and editor in Brazil. In Germany, he completed internships at the Thüringer Allgemeine Zeitung in Erfurt and Deutsche Welle in Bonn. He has been working for DW Brasil since 2021. He hosts the weekly podcast DW Revista and also works as a copywriter, producing and presenting videos. In 2024, he produced and directed a documentary on the 200th anniversary of German immigration to Brazil, which was translated into German, English and Spanish - the original language is Portuguese.
