yeule with new album "Evangelic Girl Is A Gun" in Berlin in July
Nat Ćmiel were born in Singapore, live in London and are musically active under the name yeule. Since yeule (which sounds like Jule, by the way) use the pronouns they / them, we speak of them in the plural. The 2023 album "Soft Scars", yeule's third, delighted tasteful media from Pitchfork to the Guardian. The latter newspaper wrote that "Soft Scars" was "a riotous, high-energy journey through pop punk melodies, screamo vocals and shredding guitars." That hits the nail on the head. The album title fits more than perfectly, because yeule really manage to embed very emotional and haunting lyrics in a soft way.
In 2024, yeule were also featured on the wonderful soundtrack of the cult indie film
"I Saw The TV Glow", where they delivered one of the best songs with "Anthems For A Seventeen Year-Old Girl" - in direct, friendly competition with acts such as Caroline Polachek, The Weather Station and Phoebe Bridgers. In October, "Eko" was released on the Ninja Tune label as a foretaste of the album to be released later this year. A longing, electronic, musically almost light pop song on which yeule sing of love and obsession.
The album bears the poetic-aggressive title "Evangelic Girl Is A Gun" and will be released on 30 May. yeule have already revealed in an interview that the songs are primarily influenced by their love of painting. "With this album, I wanted to write a tribute to my life and work as a painter. The Polish artist Zdzisław Beksiński is a great inspiration for us. The creatures that crawl through his dystopian, tranquil landscapes are beautifully and meticulously depicted. The nature of painting as a medium is a reflection of my emotions, both fierce and gentle. A fleeting moment in my life, captured in paint and trapped in time. Static. Unchanging. Painting has a godlike beauty. It is the refracted embodiment of everything and everyone I have seen and experienced and love and will love forever. It is all love, even in the darkest hour." A statement, like a poem.
It will be interesting to see how yeule will integrate this visual element into their live shows - you will be able to experience this live in Berlin in July:
