The opera Written on Skin, which premiered in 2012, is about passionate rebellion and emancipation. Agnes' world is gray and lifeless because she is oppressed and controlled by her husband, the old and powerful Protector. But three angels watch her from afar. They decide to intervene: In the role of a young illustrator, one of the angels sneaks into her house. He is to immortalize the Protector's legacy in a book. He brings color to Agnes' lost paradise. His ability to make stories tangible with images awakens a deep fascination in Agnes and she begins to free herself from her shackles through physical and sensual experiences.
