WITCH *live

In the organizer's words:

WITCH (We Intend To Cause Havoc) were the biggest rock band in Zambia in the 1970s and developed a new genre: zamrock. They fused influences from the Rolling Stones to Black Sabbath and James Brown, mixed them with African rhythms and bush village songs and later also drew inspiration from disco and boogie.

When their lead singer Jagari - whose name refers to Mick Jagger - roughed up the crowd with breakneck stage diving activities, it often took the help of the police to keep the fans at bay while WITCH's blend of psychedelic rock and African rhythms permeated the environment.

Recession, totalitarian politics and HIV brought the era of zamrock to an abrupt end. Emanyeo "Jagari" Chanda is the only founding member of the band who did not die as a result of HIV.

WITCH gained worldwide attention in 2012 when Now Again Records reissued their discography. Jagari was able to play concerts again with a new line-up and began a collaboration with Dutch musicians Jacco Gardner and Nic Mauskoviç. WITCH went on a successful first ever European tour with them in 2017. The WITCH sound is now influencing artists such as Zambian-born rapper Sampa The Great.

Last year, WITCH played at Gretchen and we were keen to have them on stage again. Here they are. Don't miss them, it's going to be great.
