Television brings people closer together, which is why the broadcasters decide to produce a series about reunification. A typical East German family is to be shown, with all its worries and joys. Journalist Anton Steinheim is hired as the author. The only problem is that he has never had any contact with people in the new federal states. So an Eastern German family has to be the subject of the study and the Grimms are the perfect choice. The family around the unemployed dispatcher Benno and his wife Trude, who works as a teacher, also need the money. After all, Trude's father still lives in the small apartment and their son Theo, who has just dropped out of his philosophy studies, is also popping in more often. But money only flows if the Grimms keep providing the author with material. And what do you do when you have nothing to tell from your normal to boring everyday life? You simply invent a GDR reality that knows how to use all the clichés of a West German ...
In 1994, Jurek Becker wrote WIR SIND AUCH NUR EIN VOLK (WE ARE ONLY ONE PEOPLE), the television series about reunification, which was made into a film with Manfred Krug in the same year. With sharp-witted humor, the author looks at the East-West estrangement and creates a wonderfully ironic picture of a time of getting to know each other that still seems to be going on.
