"I feel like the cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova - only without radio contact with Earth. I'm trundling through the darkness of space in mortal fear. I have no idea where up and down is and whether this will ever end." - Lykke Langer
In June 1973, Lykke Langer began her career in the state care system of the GDR. She was six weeks old and came to the company day nursery at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig. Her childhood is characterized by stays in crèches and children's homes, competitive sport, applications to leave the country and family entanglements with the state security.
WINTERKIND uses this one life story as an example to tell the story of growing up in the GDR system and the consequences that can still be felt today.
The performance sheds light on the ideological background against which education in the GDR took place, interweaves individual stories with historical context, explores absurd and bizarre facets of the system and searches for the strength that helped people survive.
Lykke Langer plays herself as a solo performer: distanced and very close, ironic, tragic, bitter, funny. Nevertheless, she is not alone in her storytelling: other voices join in, from conversations and interviews, projected images from the past and animated videos. A girl and a young woman come into play and become sisters with the now 51-year-old.
WINTERKIND is a theatrical journey through seemingly bygone times - with a penchant for punk and an attempt to break the silence between the generations.
