Architecture and scenography
Master's project WS 2024/2025

How does a metropolis organize itself?

Berlin is a city of constant change. The dynamic population structure is part of the capital's DNA. New people arrive every day, while others leave the city. Nevertheless, identification with the city remains surprisingly strong. Berlin remains Berlin - a vibrant metropolis and at the same time a capital with a heart.

How can this work?

As part of an excursion to Berlin, Master's students immersed themselves in the complex fabric of the city. Two participants each lived in one of Berlin's nine districts for two days.

Day and night, the new arrivals explored their surroundings: the history, the social and cultural composition of the population, the architecture and the unique atmosphere. They conducted interviews with residents, visited local institutions and gathered first-hand impressions. Using criteria they developed themselves, the students designed alternative city maps that reflect the diversity and complexity of the districts. These results are on display here.

In addition, each group analyzed a specific situation within their district and developed projects based on this.

This resulted in eight completely different approaches that explore the connection between architecture and scenography.

The students' work shows: Berlin's complexity is not only formative, but must be maintained in a state of constant change. The city lives through movement - and yet always remains Berlin.

The project was supervised by Prof. Antje Krauter and Prof. Wolf Gutjahr
