Since 2015, WELT/BÜHNE has been an integral part of the Residenztheater as a dynamic platform for international contemporary drama. In residencies lasting several months, international authors develop new texts that act as an indispensable driving force for a politically aware, lively theater that is open to all generations. The authors take us into new worlds with their stories, they sketch the world situation poetically. It is often the authors themselves who have a keen sense for tectonic shifts in society, perceive socio-political developments at a very early stage and process them in their literary works. In the WELT/BÜHNE salons, the authors and the Residenztheater ensemble present the results of the intensive work phase in Munich in readings and discussions.

In many cultures, the theater text is the starting point for a theater evening. It defines the content, opens up new perspectives and invents the language in which the characters communicate on stage and with the audience. The play is what makes theater evenings original - especially in times when texts can supposedly be produced by automated artificial intelligence algorithms. Conveying plays to another theater landscape is a complex process due to the language involved and requires a great deal of care and support. The annual WELT/BÜHNE festival opens up the artistic transfer of texts to the stage in productions and enables a personal exchange between the international artists, the audience and the people at the Residenztheater in the festival context.

The WELT/BÜHNE platform was conceived to promote the creation of new texts for the stage and to make authors known beyond national and linguistic borders.

WELT/BÜHNE is organized in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut and with the support of the Friends* of the Residenztheater. The guest performances "Hullo, Bu-Bye, Koko, Come In" and "Blind Runner" were made possible by a private foundation that the Friends* Association was able to secure.

Each author will be introduced to the audience during their residency. In the WELT/BÜHNE Salon, Residenztheater actors will read the guests' fresh texts - followed by a discussion to get to know the authors and ask questions: What role does theater play in their respective home countries? What are the working conditions like? What is the fascination for theater? But also: How do they view us and the German-speaking theater landscape?

Carla Zúñiga Morales is a playwright, director, actress and theater educator from Chile.
Her work includes over 30 world premieres, including "Sentimientos" (Feelings), "Historias de Amputación a la Hora del Té" (Amputation Stories at Tea Time), "La Trágica Agonía de un Pájaro Azul" (The Tragic Agony of a Blue Bird), "Prefiero que me coman los perros" (I Prefer to be Eaten by Dogs) (awarded Best Playwriting by the Critics' Circle in 2018), "Yo también quiero ser un hombre blanco heterosexual" (I also want to be a heterosexual white man) (Award for Best Literary Work of the Year 2019), "Un montón de brujas volando por el cielo" (A bunch of witches flying through the sky) (Award for Best Play of the Critics' Circle 2020).
