Vor 50 Jahren - Münster 1974

In the organizer's words:

The exhibition "Münster 1974" shows around 80 photographs in chronological order by press photographer Rudolf Krause, who worked as a photojournalist for the "Westfälische Nachrichten" newspaper from 1963. They document important events and architectural changes in the cityscape as well as the everyday life and leisure activities of the people of Münster in that year. The highlights of public life are supplemented by numerous incidents that enriched their time and the city in very different ways.

Short texts explain the motifs captured in the photos. They provide information on events and topics that are still known today or have since been forgotten.

On May 7, Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt resigned after it became known that one of his closest advisors, Günter Guillaume, had worked as a spy for the GDR and had communicated important information from the Chancellery to East Berlin. This was not to be the only resignation. In August, US President Richard M. Nixon resigned from office after his involvement in the so-called Watergate affair became known.

In Münster, the newly built Allwetterzoo opened its doors on May 2. Shortly afterwards, the new art and culture museum at Aegidii-Markt opened with a week-long series of events. In addition, the completion of several halls of residence slowly eased the tense housing situation for students.

The exhibition continues the evaluation of the Münster City Museum's most extensive collection - photography: Several thousand historical negatives and prints make it possible to trace the diverse events of 50 years ago in a careful selection.
