Verarbeitung von Migrationserfahrungen in Graphic Novels

In the organizer's words:

What does it mean to leave your own culture behind and build a new life in a foreign culture? Comics and graphic novels can obviously portray this topic in a particularly impressive way, as the topic of "migration" has been experiencing an unprecedented boom in this genre for around 15 years.
Dr. Rüdiger Singer, a qualified literary scholar, will use two prominent examples to show how comics convey the experience of migration: Shaun Tan's wordless picture story "A New Country" (The Arrival) is an international bestseller. It shows how a family father in the early 20th century emigrates from a seemingly European country to a surreal land that initially seems puzzling not only to him but also to the reader. Eventually, however, he finds his way and is able to catch up with his family.
Birgit Weyhe's award-winning graphic novel "Madgermanes" tells the story of people from Mozambique who came to the GDR in the 1990s from the perspective of two men and a woman. They stand for a group of people who were recruited to supposedly receive a good education, but were actually exploited - in Mozambique they are called "Madgermanes". Nevertheless, Weyhe's three main characters have not only negative but also positive experiences in East Germany.
The event is taking place as part of the "International Weeks against Racism" and in cooperation with Kiel City Library.
