A family story - based on the novel by Necati Öziri

Arda is in intensive care. From the hospital, he writes a letter to his father Metin, whom he has never met, but whom he would love to get to know. Arda's liver has suddenly stopped working. Time is running out and Arda uses every second to remember everything and imagine what it would be like if his father hadn't disappeared...! Everything has cost so much time - this stolen time, the days and hours that Arda has spent in queues at government offices, doctors or waiting for school books from the social fund for the first school year. Arda didn't spend this stolen time alone, but with his mother Ümran and his older sister Aylin. Mother and daughter have not spoken a word to each other for ten years. Arda talks about his mother, about her lost childhood after the severe earthquake in Turkey and about her life as a single mother in Germany, on the outskirts of the Ruhr region, about his sister who left home forever, about his friends who left him every summer.

Vatermal is a family story full of longings and irreplaceable losses. A melancholy circle of empathy through the description of violence, racism, poverty and patriarchy in a society without empathy: Germany.
