Until not so long ago, Peter Becher, who holds a doctorate in history, was known to literature enthusiasts in particular as a leading expert on the life and work of Adalbert Stifter (1805-1868), one of the classics of 19th century German-language literature. His biography of Stifter, the second edition of which was published in 2017, has the status of a standard work. Peter Becher only emerged as a literary storyteller relatively late, with his novel "Unter dem Steinernen Meer". This revolves around the sometimes violent events at the end of the war in 1945 in the then German-occupied Czechoslovakia, which have a lasting impact on the lives of the novel's protagonists. Becher's narrative takes up themes that still play an important and often controversial role in the German-Czech dialog today.
