Wit in the sense of witty and quick-witted - that is what characterizes Nele Pollatschek as an author and as a speaker. Her response to the big problems of the present was also quick-witted: "Small Problems". This is the title of her novel, which begins with a list of good intentions written on December 31st. Nele Pollatschek conjures up the dream of a tidy life that everyone knows. Her story is funny, desperate and extremely realistic.
Dmitrij Kapitelman shares her rhetorical talent and fine sense for the often underestimated depths of everyday life. His new novel "Russian Specialties" tells of the small desperations that cause major conflicts. It begins quite mundanely, with: Vodka, pelmeni and Eastern European solidarity. A Jewish-Ukrainian family from Kyiv sells all of this in their store in Leipzig. And it's all going well. Until February 24, 2022, when the mother sides with Putin, but not the son. Instead, he travels to Ukraine in the middle of the war. The tenderly tragic and strangely comic story of an inner-family tug-of-war to save affection and belonging begins. Nele Pollatschek and Dmitrij Kapitelman read from their books and talk about loss, ambiguous humor and the big and small problems they are dealing with.
