Screensavers were originally developed to protect phosphor screens from screen burn-in. They only activate in moments of human inactivity. The functional necessity of constant movement shaped their characteristic aesthetics: dark backgrounds with repetitive patterns and continuous motion sequences. Although their technical function is to protect hardware, they developed a visual language that is paradoxically not designed for active observation - their aesthetics unfold precisely in the absence of human attention.
This logic of non-observation connects them with deserted, air-conditioned server rooms in which AIs train and operate. The partially AI-generated screensavers show a visible surface, while the actual processes remain hidden.
