In the organizer's words:

Cuban cheerfulness meets Rhenish profundity - or vice versa...?!
Gunther Tiedemann and Yaniel Matos met at the 23rd New Directions Cello Festival in Ithaca/New York in 2017 and immediately experienced a mutual personal and musical affinity, which led to their duo collaboration at the 25th Rio Cello Festival in Rio de Janeiro in 2019. In 2020, Yaniel Matos was invited by Gunther Tiedemann to perform with the Cologne String Big Band - the string big band of the Cologne University of Music and Dance - and played concerts with the Gunther Tiedemann - David Plate Duo.

In their duo, they look forward to the music they both bring with them - their own and that of others, old and new - but with a very personal meaning. In addition to South American sounds, they fearlessly encounter jazz and rock.

Yaniel Matos comes from Santiago de Cuba, the eastern part of Cuba, which is most strongly influenced by black culture. He lived in São Paulo/Brazil for 24 years. His music is the result of a fusion of traditional elements from the region he comes from and the influence of a more European education. The experience of Brazilian music leads him to a new relationship with the Black Bahian culture, absorbing new rhythms, colors and a different way of experiencing South American music.
