The Grammy-nominated forefathers of alternative cabaret released their album "Lessons In Nihilism" in spring 2024. A theme that has always run through their work: the futility and absurdity of existence. Packed with witty humor, they argue that all our achievements lead to nothing - like throwing stones into a pond, the effect spills away into nothingness.
On their upcoming tour, they will also be placing a second focus on their work "Mountains Of Madness". The song cycle is inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft and was brought to the stage in 2005 together with Alexander Hacke from the EINSTÜRZENDEN NEUBAUTEN and Danielle de Picciotto. A DVD was released the following year and in 2020, as a corona activity, the audio version was released as a Bandcamp album on the band's website. Time to see the songs live again.
The restless band has been on permanent world tour for over 30 years. It's not for nothing that they are often called "the hardest working band on earth". Not a year goes by without 1-2 albums, a new program, theater productions and permanent worldwide tours. Dark and absurd theatricality are their trademark, and the dark cabaret genre, which became popular in the early 2000s, is based on them.
With an international reputation as one of the most interesting avant-garde bands in the world, the TIGER LILLIES never cease to surprise, shock and entertain with their inimitable sound. And in doing so, they fuse the macabre magic of pre-war Berlin with the biting edge of punk.
The world of TIGER LILLIES is dark, peculiar and varied, with moments of black humor and immense beauty. This unique Brechtian street opera trio has been touring the world for over 30 years with concerts and plays such as The Tiger Lillies Christmas Carol, The Ancient Mariner and the West End hit Shockheaded Peter.
With wry humor and sharp irony, the TIGER LILLIES point an implicitly reproachful finger back at us: what the hell are we doing, why are we laughing at stuff like this? The music is a mixture of pre-war and Weimar Republic Berlin cabaret, anarchist opera and gypsy music that also brings back memories of Bertolt Brecht, Jacques Brel and Edith Piaf.
"It's not surprising that their cult following is worldwide - a Tiger Lillies gig is a journey into wild emotion which passes right through melodrama and out the other side into bizarre beauty." London Evening Standard
"In an ideal world, The Tiger Lillies would represent Britain in the Eurovision song contest." The Times
"It is hard to do justice to the dark, poetic brilliance of The Tiger Lillies, so the best thing I can advise is that you seek out a ticket for this glorious show. " The Scotsman (Edinburgh Festival).''Martyn Jacques is a charismatic focus. Trudging between his piano and accordion like a man weighed down by supernatural dread - yet his voice is a molten cascade. The execution is impeccable throughout. Phenomenal.
