On April 30, 1945, the US Army reached Munich, which lay in ruins. US tanks came through the English Garden across the Isar to Bogenhausen. The war was over, the Nazi state had collapsed, destruction everywhere! A zero hour? - A new beginning that would take years.
Bogenhausen had a considerable Jewish population, which had been wiped out in 1945. The villas confiscated by the Americans were used by aid organizations for displaced persons. Bogenhausen was characterized by the black market in Möhlstraße, but also by the influx of refugees and displaced persons.
What shaped people's everyday lives during this time? How did people deal with the shadow of the past? What feelings, dreams and hopes accompanied the change?
NordOstKultur e.V., an association for district culture in the north-east of Munich, presents a piece of Bogenhausen's history with many original photos.
In May 1945, the end of the Second World War set a new course in politics and society that still influences the way we live together today. The program "1945-2025 Zero Hour? How we became what we are." by the Munich Cultural Department aims to commemorate this with an extensive program of events.
