Strange Country from Hamburg have undergone a remarkable development since their rather acoustic and traditional early days in 2008. A few of the older country-oriented numbers can still be found in the live set, but the focus has long been on wild, virtuoso improvisations.
The band's superpower is certainly that the individual musicians react to each other in a way that can only be experienced with a few other bands. Strange Country is not a loud band - the five of them play with immense dynamism. Together, they repeatedly spiral out of the most tender moments into unreserved catharsis. Then they ride the crest of the wave, let everything fall into each other and start the game all over again - anew every evening, never along the same paths.
A Strange Country concert still consists of their own strong songs, but the program only becomes a whole through the interpretations of foreign material. Whereby the term "cover version" is perhaps a misleading description. Rather, the selected songs undergo a complete reinterpretation - the somewhat worn-out phrase "make their own" finally applies here.
Influences? Traces of Bill Callahan, Nick Cave, the late Bob Dylan, the spirit of the US jam bands and again and again the total spontaneity of jazz.
