Steve Gunn has come a long way. Coming from the niche of the US guitar avant-garde, he first became active as a solo artist in 2007, joining various folk rock innovators such as Bill Callahan and Jason Molina with his releases, and was then jointly responsible for the fluffy Americana sound in Kurt Vile's touring band The Violators, among others.
After working with a classic rock band for several years, he is now back on the road as a solo artist, singing sad stories from an America that may soon only exist in illustrated books with a breathless, yearning baritone voice and silvery guitar sounds. It is the America of abandoned gas stations, of barren and dusty landscapes, of lonely figures. Gunn translates this dense atmosphere into a tenacious flow that is occasionally interrupted by rocking uptempos or passages driven by an African groove.
