Reading with music

The Hamburg singer and songwriter Stefan Gwildis is one of the most successful, versatile and consistent artists in the German-speaking music scene. To mark the 200th birthday of Theodor Storm, Stefan Gwildis fulfilled a long-cherished wish with the audio book "gwildis reads storm. der schimmelreiter", released on 25.01.2017.

On the album "gwildis reads storm. der schimmelreiter", Stefan Gwildis presents a new interpretation of Theodor Storm's novella of the same name, penned by Dr. Sonja Valentin, as a haunting reading. "I've always been a radio fan and love radio plays and stories read aloud. Storm's 'Der Schimmelreiter' is an immortal classic; it simply made sense to record a vaporized version. The tale of the mathematically gifted, ambitious dyke count Hauke Haien is part of the established repertoire of myths and legends of the North. Storm's hero, who doubts the omnipotence of God and takes up the fight against the forces of nature, fascinates and captivates us to this day. He was a visionary, ahead of his time, a lover, also an obsessive - and a tragic failure."

With his unmistakable baritone voice, Stefan Gwildis gives the 1888 novella by the great German lyricist and writer a whole new lease of life: Accompanied by Tobias Neumann on piano and Hagen Kuhr on cello, Gwildis takes his listeners on a gloomy and oppressive journey back in time to storm-tossed North Friesland in the early 19th century to resurrect the ghostly saga of the tragic figure Hauke Haien in his very own version. Parallel to the release of the "gwildis reads storm. der schimmelreiter" CD, Stefan Gwildis and his small accompanying ensemble are on an intimate reading tour through selected concert halls - the audience can expect a unique live experience in a deliberately small and minimalist setting. Anyone who can still vaguely remember reading "Der Schimmelreiter" at school will be surprised by Stefan Gwildis' 80-minute interpretation and may even find a completely new approach to Storm's world-famous novella!
