...sprachlos! - Stummfilme mit live-Musik: Simon Quinn Quartett spielt "Nanook of the North"

In the organizer's words:

After Simon Quinn and his instrumental interlocutors have already left us in devout bewilderment with their performance in the last two years, there is now a new edition of their performance in a more established setting.

To ensure that this troupe can shine in front of an adequate resonance chamber, we have teamed up with a more expert partner than we can be for this occasion: the Cinémathèque Leipzig!

Not that the performance between our rucksacks wouldn't have had its charm, but this way the performance has more impact!

Simon Quinn has been writing his soundtracks to masterpieces of the silent film era for his quartet of bass, drums, piano and trumpet since 2007.

This time they will perform Nanook of the North, a silent film documentary, or actually docufiction, from 1922 by Robert Flaherty.

In the far north of Canada, the lives of the Inuit Nanuk and Nyla and their family follow the changing seasons. With images of ingenious hunting techniques, the construction of igloos and sledging and kayaking, this film bears witness to the fascinating culture of the Inuit, which was just beginning to disintegrate in the years when it came into contact with Western civilization. Some also say that NANOOK OF THE NORTH is the first documentary in film history. However, this is not quite true. In fact, we see many hunting scenes and various Inuit handicraft techniques in the film. It's just that most of it was re-enacted.

What is true, however, is that Robert J. Flaherty brought the heavy and unwieldy film technology of the time to the Arctic and worked on his film for a year under the most difficult weather conditions. And thus created something that is as controversial as it is interesting.

You can experience the fusion of cinema, music and abstract wanderlust in the intimate atmosphere of Leipzig's NaTo. The magic of the memories of 35-millimeter reels, which project their flickering light onto the screen, humming in the back of the audience; a last cough in the tense room, while the musicians tune their instruments briefly as the "hall lights" dim...

And off they go on a melancholy and inspiring tour into the past and to other places, accompanied with longing and virtuosity by the guest live musicians.
