Dortmund director and screenwriter Yasemin Şamdereli is a jury member of our 2025 feature film competition. In acclaimed films such as Alles getürkt and Almanya, she uses clever humor to break down stereotypes about people from immigrant families and tell complex stories in an entertaining way.
Samia tells the story of Somali Olympian Samia Yusuf Omar. Samia grows up in Mogadishu, the Somali capital, where civil war has been raging since 1988. Running is everything for Samia. She defies the harassment of the local militia and trains secretly in an abandoned stadium. Her big goal is the Olympics. #Samia# is a sensitive and often very funny portrait of a tough young sportswoman who lets no circumstances stop her from realizing her dreams. Like many thousands of other people, she risks her life for the hope of a better future. Winner of the Munich Film Festival Audience Award, among others.
