In our Summer Cinema Open Air, a film about Turkish music culture in Germany, with live music from the Oriental Music Academy Mannheim:

Turkish music from Germany - a subculture? No: the musical expression of millions of citizens of Turkish origin! Starting with the first guest workers, an independent Turkish music culture developed in West Germany: protest songs, pop songs, songs from abroad were highly successful. The German majority society was not interested in it, partly out of ignorance and partly out of open xenophobia. Cem Kaya (REMAKE, REMIX, RIP-OFF) traces the peculiarities of the diverse Turkish music from Germany in a lively, colorful and stirring way, combining interviews and archive material in a dynamic montage to create a wide-ranging mosaic. From wedding bands - which have to master all the styles of the old Turkish homeland - to Turkish rock and disco folk to hip hop and pop, the film tells of a culture in Germany that many people know far too little about.
