CAPTURE SCULPTURES
13.11.24 TO 13.4.25
From November 13, 2024 to April 13, 2025, the Sprengel Museum Hannover is presenting the exhibition "Sculpture Capture" in its Sprengel Focus room. Sculptures by Barbara Hepworth, Richard Deacon and Tony Cragg will be on display. The special feature: the exhibition's educational program offers opportunities to explore art in ways other than through the sense of sight. The small exhibition designed by the Education and Outreach department is part of a process that aims to break down barriers in the museum and make it more inclusive.
"Grasping Sculptures" invites visitors to experience art through touch. Visitors can trace and feel the contours and surface of a tactile model with their hands in designated sensory tours. Visitors are also invited to discover the sculptures by drawing on paper and pencil at the drawing tables provided. Audio descriptions are also available for the works on display as well as for guidance. A tactile floor guidance system enables blind and visually impaired visitors to find their way around the exhibition.
"With "Grasping Sculptures", the Sprengel Museum Hannover is opening up to inclusive and experience-oriented museum experiences. With the exhibition, we want to promote the process towards a barrier-free museum," say the creators Kristina Sinn and Dörte Wiegand, Education and Outreach, Sprengel Museum Hannover, who have been working increasingly on inclusive offers for visitors in recent years.
A focus group advises the Sprengel Museum Hannover on the development and implementation of inclusive outreach formats and supports the process towards a more open and accessible institution. The advisory team includes Franca Amici, Claudia Böhme, Silke Hoffmann, Andreas Mangelsdorf, Frank Mehler, Annita Niclaus, Gerd Schwesig, Ute Spangenberg, Diana-Tamara Zilinski.
In their works, Barbara Hepworth, Richard Deacon and Tony Cragg explore how color, material, object and space interact. Hepworth often works directly with the material in her wooden objects without producing preliminary sketches. Cragg, on the other hand, creates his forms using sketches and models made from various materials. For the sculpture "Box" he uses industrially produced material. Deacon focuses on the interplay of material, form and production technique. In his sculpture "Another Kind of Blue", he makes the process of creation recognizable through perceptible traces of production.
The Sprengel Museum Hannover was evaluated by "Reisen für Alle" in 2024 and awarded the "Accessibility tested" certificate. Detailed information can be found in the test report on our website.
