Anton Bruckner: Symphony No. 4 in E flat major

This Midnight Hour by British composer Anna Clyne (*1980) is a one-movement work for large orchestra, inspired by two poems by Juan Ramón Ramirez and Charles Baudelaire, which refines the sound world of romantic symphonic poetry and carries it into the thoughts and sounds of our time. In The Blue Cathedral, the American composer Jennifer Higdon (*1962) creates a piece of clarifying musical mourning in which the two solo instruments, flute and clarinet, enter into intimate and touching sound constellations with the orchestra. Anton Bruckner's great Symphony No. 4 in E flat major, which was premiered in 1881, is not so much a Romantic contrast to this as it provides a symphonic framework for the two more recent works, which by no means let go of their connection to tradition.
