Girl groups of the 60s, the Beach Boys and the early punk rock of the Ramones had a big influence on the unique sound of SHONEN KNIFE, which quickly earned the band a reputation as Japan's female answer to The Ramones. In 1991, none other than Kurt Cobain from Nirvana discovered the band for himself at a concert in L.A. and was more than enthusiastic afterwards: "When I finally got to see them live, I was transformed into a hysterical nine-year-old-girl at a Beatles concert." As the most famous fan, he thus set the starting signal for a good collaboration. Nirvana confirmed SHONEN KNIFE as support for their UK tour for their successful album Nevermind, during which Cobain even covered the song "Twist Barbie" by the two sisters Naoko Yamano and Atsuko Yamano live.
