Second World Music - Thementage: Auf Wiedersehen Palast – Vom Abbruch und Aufbruch

In the GDR, singing along to political songs from all over the world was a way of embodying internationalism and solidarity.

Recordings of formal agreements and music by individuals were mainly played on GDR radio. Later, recordings of GDR music festivals such as the Festival of Political Song (FdpL), organized by the Oktoberklub 1970-1990, were broadcast. The FdpL, possibly the first world music festival, brought artists from all continents to East Berlin. Festival events, recordings and songbooks helped singing clubs to expand their repertoire and Latin American songs such as "Venceremos" were sung particularly frequently.

During the "Second World Music" talk, festival organizers and Oktoberklub members reflect on the international connections and relationships forged through song, while DJ Yuriy spins selected festival recordings to be listened to together. Perhaps the audience will even sing along and bring the sound circles of the Second World back to life! This will be followed by a guided tour of the "Über Grenzen" exhibition to talk to former employees about the international relations of GDR radio. After listening to excerpts from the Latin American program of GDR radio, the audience is invited to learn one of the many "new social dances" that were invented in the GDR and broadcast via the radio system in the 1950s and 1960s. They were intended to promote the "new socialist personality" and can perhaps also help you to find a "new you".
