Sixto Rodriguez... Never heard of him? The Mexican-born singer-songwriter was once as celebrated as Bob Dylan and Elvis Presley combined - but only in South Africa. Here, his album Cold Fact became the soundtrack to the anti-apartheid movement in the 70s. In Rodriguez's home country, the USA, however, nobody knew of his fame, not even he himself. One day, two South African fans set off in search of their idol, who was the subject of many rumors, especially about his supposed suicide. What they discover in the end is far more than they had hoped for.
SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN is the incredible and fairytale-like story of a star who wasn't supposed to be one, a brilliant musician whose time had not yet come. In his cinematic journey, director Malik Bendjelloul portrays the quiet side of fame and a fascinating personality. Rodriguez's songs, which are worth listening to at last, are always present.
The story is simply too good to be left untold: SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN is a tribute to an unrecognized genius of recent music history. Using interviews, animated scenes and archive material, Swedish director Malik Bendjelloul has put together a captivating documentary about the US singer Rodriguez, which is perfectly accompanied by his soundtrack.
Rodriguez' music is a discovery. His lyrics have a great pictorial poetry and grimly humanistic laments. His blues-based folk combines dark electronic organs with lush violins and an infectious groove that meanders between rock, folk and pop.
Malik Bendjelloul spent over four years making his debut film entirely on his own. Only shortly before completing the film was he able to get Simon Chinn, the successful producer of MAN ON WIRE, on board for the project.
SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN received two awards at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012 (Best Foreign Documentary, Jury & Audience), won the Audience Award at the Melbourne Film Festival and was shown at the Hamburg Film Festival. In the summer, the documentary gem landed in the top ten of the British cinema charts.
