The story of Odette, transformed into a swan, who must be rescued from the clutches of the sorcerer Red Beard by Prince Siegfried, has everything it takes to be a hit: a magical setting, a love story that transcends all boundaries, deception and betrayal, and a dramatic or - depending on your taste - open ending. Based on the emotionally expressive music of Peter Tchaikovsky, haunting in its motifs, the choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov (1895) has become the epitome of classical ballet.

So a Swan Lake is always a vague promise to the audience, an invitation to anticipation. One will see something again that one has known for a long time or heard a lot about - like visiting relatives. And of course, you ask yourself the same questions every time: is he still "like before"? Will he tell me the same old story? Has he changed and is no longer recognizable? In what look will he appear? And will we have something to say to each other?

Xin Peng Wang's interpretation has formulated clear answers for these questions. Siegfried is an eccentric artist, a wealthy bohemian who longs to return to another time and struggles with the abysses and delusions of his psyche. Frank Fellmann's set design and Bernd Skodzig's costumes create an imaginatively inspired, detailed world that speaks to us through Xin Peng Wang's choreography: a neoclassical virtuoso language that respects tradition (there will be swans, yes!) but is energetically infused with a contemporary vibrancy.
